Vladimir Propp's theory

After Propp studied 100 fairy tales, he developed a character theory for the study of media texts and productions. He discovered that all characters fall into 7 broad character types. All do these are found in a range of medias.


The villain : Locked in a constant battle with the hero who of which is protecting a princess from the villain.


The donor: Gives the hero a goal or a piece of information that helps them prepare for the future and what the future is going to bring.


The helper: Assists the hero often referred to as their 'sidekick'.


The princess: Needs assistance from the hero, usually because they are in danger, usually the princess is the victim in the narrative.


The dispatcher: Is the character who sends that hero on the mission.


Hero: Reacts to the donor and usually saves the princess, often then falling in love with the princess.


False hero: May appear good however attempts to take the credit for the real hero's actions.
