Question 7 - AS media evaluation

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from to the full product?

Firstly, the planning process, I feel as if I went into a lot more depth and thought a lot more about different and new aspects which would make this clip better than my preliminary task, for example the story board when we were doing to story board I found that I would have done my whole story board then thought of another idea and gone back to changed and added in this new aspect I had thought of that I believe would make the storyline more suitable for my target audience, the new aspects would engage the audience more and make then understand the story better, There are many more components like the title planning and the font we would use for the title, in addition the overall  planning process took a lot longer for 2 main reasons the first reason is that this was our final piece and I needed to ensure that it fits the target audience best as possible and the second reason is that I had more time to go into further depth of planning. Overall what I have learnt about planning is that is always space for improvement.

Secondly, the filming process, in the prelim task we had a specification of different shot types I had to use however with my final piece I could use whatever shot it thought we appropriate to grasp the audience attention, when I was filming I filmed the same shot over and over again with the use of different shot types so later on in the creating of this clip I could decide what shot would work best with following the narrative clearly.

Finally, the editing process, this is the main process that I have learnt the most from as I was very new to the final cut pro software as I had never done media before as I mentioned in a previous question. I had done some research for my prelim task so I knew what to do with that, however while I was doing the prelim task I came across some difficulties which caused me to learnt as I was going along. In comparison to my final piece (opening sequence) I had a much better understanding of the software I would be using due to the prelim task, however there were some aspect I hadn’t used before in the prelim task such as adding media from YouTube however I used YouTube to find out how to do this, also some of the tools like the blade tool I hadn’t used before but because I knew more about the tools on the programme I managed to figure it out.

Overall  I feel like my mind had developed in the creativity of the opening sequence but also due to me never doing media studies before I have a better understanding over all of ever process involved.

Editing - development

This was our first completed final piece, however before we as a group published it as our final piece we thought to try and make it as satisfying as possible for out target audience we would ask for feedback. After showing this to them they gave us very helpful feedback and from this feedback it allowed us to have time to make adjustments.
The first bit of feedback we were given was that the Christmas scene didn't really fit in very well in its existing place, so we then asked them where we could place it for it to make sense.
After discussing as a group we have decided in our editing session we will be adjusting where the flash back but also add in a title saying when this was to ensure the audience know it is a flash back.
In addition, The second point in the feedback was that the title font we used didn't fit in with the physiological horror genre throughout the opening sequence. This is leading us to changing the font for the titles so ensure the font fits with the genre choice.

This picture shows how we have changed the font after receiving feedback, however this font isn't a typewriter font as a group and after looking at existing opening scenes we decided to change from a type writer font to a simple, bold and contrasting font.

This shows how me and my group work with the feedback given and then went onto move where the flash back was to ensure there was a continuous flow of horror genre conventions throughout the opening scene. Also this makes the scene make more sense as it then beings to show the start of the film and where the story all began.
